Fun at the Zoo with 30 K-9 Officers!

After more than a year without any events, the Big Barker team was thrilled to be in the company of 30 K-9s and their handlers last week. We couldn't think of a better way to kick off summer than with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office at the Elmwood Park Zoo for a very special donation event.

Montgomery County Sheriff's Office Big Barker K9 event

We met officers from all over the county and were honored to give 30 hardworking K-9s their very own Big Barker beds. Each of these dogs serve their communities alongside their handlers for up to 12 hours a day. After long days like that, these dogs deserve a comfortable place to rest up for the whatever the next day may bring. At Big Barker, we know that big dogs are more likely to suffer from joint diseases like hip dysplasia and canine arthritis, so we knew that these pups needed the extra support (and they deserved it too!).

Thanks to two steadfast community leaders, Norristown Fire Chief, Tom O’Donnell and the President of Finding Shelter, Grace Kelly, who worked to put this event together. And thank you to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office for these officers and their continued service.

About the Elmwood Park Zoo

The Elmwood Park Zoo is an especially great place for an event like this since it is America's first dog-friendly zoo! On select days of the year, called Dog Days or Yappy Hours, your family can bring your pup with you to enjoy a trip to the zoo.

About Finding Shelter

Finding Shelter is a non-profit, no-kill, volunteer supported animal rescue organization dedicated to the saving, rehabilitation, training, and permanent placement of dogs and cats in need.

Finding Shelter is particularly well-known for the “V for Victoria” campaign. Victoria was a German Shepherd rescued by Finding Shelter in 2017 from a puppy mill in Lancaster County. Unfortunately, after she was rescued, Victoria was diagnosed with Degenerative Myelopathy and was placed on hospice care for the remainder of her life. She was adopted into her forever home and passed away on February 26, 2019. In her honor, Finding Shelter established the V for Victoria campaign to help Victoria have all the fun in life she was denied while she was in the puppy mill.

Thank you to everyone who came out for this event, the people who made the event possible, and the hardworking K-9’s who we hope will enjoy their new Big Barker beds for years to come.
