Looking for a fun way to stay active and bond with your dog? There are plenty of official dog sports that will get both of you moving. From trail running to paddling on the water, here’s a rundown of four exciting sports to try with your dog. We’ll guide you on how easy they are to train for and what equipment you'll need to get started.

  1. Canicross

If you and your dog enjoy running together, Canicross is a fantastic sport to try. Originating in Europe, Canicross involves trail running with your dog harnessed to you, giving both of you a solid workout. It’s a great way to bond while enjoying nature and keeping fit.

Equipment Needed: 🐾🐾🐾 (3 paws)

  • A proper Y-shaped harness for your dog (for better comfort and less strain on their back)
  • A bungee leash to absorb shock
  • A canicross belt for you to connect to your dog

Easiness to Train: 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾 (5 paws) This sport can be easy to pick up, especially if your dog already enjoys running. With some basic training to respond to directional commands like "left" and "right," you'll both be ready to hit the trails in no time.

Easy Alternative: Running with your dog is a great introduction to Canicross. Just grab a leash and head to your favorite running spot!

Mark your calendar: Don’t miss the 2024 Rehab Rover Canicross Race in Virginia on October 5, 2024! This event, hosted by Veterinary Rehabilitation Services of Virginia and Harness Canicular LLC, is the first-ever Canicross race in the Commonwealth of Virginia. There will be a 10k and 5k Canicross race for seasoned runners, plus a 5k Casual Dog-Friendly Trail run, perfect for those new to Canicross or with dogs still in training. Whether you're walking, running, or hobbling, it's a fun day for all!

  1. Agility

If your dog loves to zoom around, agility might be the perfect sport. It involves guiding your dog through an obstacle course as fast and accurately as possible. This sport builds your dog's physical and mental strength while improving your communication as a team.

Equipment Needed: 🐾🐾🐾🐾 (4 paws)

  • Agility tunnels, jumps, weave poles, and ramps
  • Treats or toys for rewards

Easiness to Train: 🐾🐾 (2 paws) Teaching agility requires patience, as each obstacle needs to be learned separately. However, most dogs find agility fun and stimulating, so they'll enjoy the training process.

  1. Mushing

Mushing isn’t just for sled dogs in snowy regions. You can enjoy this thrilling sport with your pup in colder months or even on dry land with a wheeled rig. Mushing, where dogs pull a sled (or wheeled cart), strengthens your dog's endurance and working abilities.

Equipment Needed: 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾 (5 paws)

  • Sled or wheeled rig
  • Specialized mushing harness
  • Booties to protect your dog's paws

Easiness to Train: 🐾🐾🐾🐾 (4 paws) While some dogs are natural pullers, mushing involves specific training to ensure your dog knows how to pull safely and follow commands. Additionally, dogs may need time to adapt to colder weather conditions, as mushing typically happens in the winter or on cold terrain. Proper conditioning to the environment is important to prevent injuries or overexertion. You also need to consider that your dog would be working with other dogs.

  1. Surfing or Paddleboarding

For water-loving pups, surfing or paddleboarding together is a fantastic way to enjoy the waves. You can start with gentle water sports like paddleboarding, where your dog sits or stands on the board while you paddle. Surfing requires a bit more balance but is thrilling once your dog gets the hang of it.

Equipment Needed: 🐾🐾🐾🐾 (4 paws)

  • A dog-friendly surfboard or paddleboard
  • A canine life jacket
  • Waterproof treats for positive reinforcement

Easiness to Train: 🐾🐾 (2 paws) This one’s a bit trickier! Surfing requires not only stability and comfort for your dog, but you also need to be confident surfing or handling the board in the water. Some dogs may take time to get used to the balance and sensation of being on a moving board, so patience is key.

Easy Alternative: Swimming with your dog is a simple way to keep them active in the water without the need for fancy equipment. Plus, it’s excellent for their joints!

Protect Your Pup's Joints

Before diving into any of these activities, it's essential to protect your dog’s joints, especially if they're prone to conditions like arthritis. Joint health supplements, including proven ingredients like UC-II® collagen, EPA, and DHA, provide much more comprehensive support than glucosamine alone. These ingredients help reduce inflammation, protect cartilage, and improve joint flexibility, ensuring your dog stays active for years to come.

Whether you're running trails, navigating an agility course, mushing through the snow, or paddling in the water, these sports offer a fun way to bond with your dog while keeping both of you healthy and fit. Just remember to keep your dog’s comfort in mind, starting slow, training consistently, and incorporating joint-supporting supplements like Jope’s Hip and Joint to keep your pup in peak form!
