Totally Wicked Dogs Show Out in Surf Competition

The 18th Annual Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon was held this past Sunday on the shores of Del Mar, California. The competition benefits the Helen Woodward Animal Center, which raises money for orphaned pets. 50 surFURs competed throughout the duration of the event.

They were judged based on the categories of “length of their ride, wave technique, enthusiasm and confidence on the board,” according to a press release. First, second, and third place winners were named in each weight class and then combined for the final round, "Best in Surf!"

Sugar (above) took home the gold coming in first place, with Delilah and Guinness (below) finishing in second and third respectively.

Dogs and humans then competed in a freestyle event focused on creativity. Zia and Zailey (below) were crowned winners in that event.

Finally, a crowd favorite event called "Duos and Trios", which features more than one dog on a board, was held along with a Peeps and Pups event. This event allowed for dogs and their humans to surf in tandem. In addition to the surfing, a costume contest with the theme of "rock stars and music legends" was held.

First place was awarded to Doodle and Nacho (above). Other winners included Cinnabella (for most crafty); Lily (great job award); Teddy Henry (wow award); Willow, Kai and Gilbert (most dedicated); Chewy (most colorful); and Emma (most unique).

Congratulations to all of the winners at this amazing event! You can learn more about the Animal Center by visiting their website
