Texas-based non-profit, Off The Grid Animal Sanctuary, has focused on the rehabilitation of animals of all sizes for years. Specifically, they hone in on making sure their animals feel safe and cared for. Just a few days ago, a visitor to the sanctuary came looking for that safety and care.
A stray puppy showed up outside the gates of facility looking dirty and disheveled. “He showed up at our gates at our sanctuary 10 minutes ago,” Smith wrote in an Instagram post. “I heard the dogs barking like crazy, so I [looked] at the gates and noticed a dog looking in.”
Smith went to the gates immediately and was shocked at how large the puppy was. “I could tell he was looking for help, but his face was a little intimidating to me for a brief moment,” Smith wrote. “I could’ve been afraid he’d bite me. He could’ve been afraid I’d hurt him, but because of the connection that comes with being at the right place at the right time … when you know, you know!”
Smith spoke softly to the dog, later named Deputy, and as the two approached each other, Deputy stuck out his paw to Smith. With the trust between the two strong, she took him into the facility to be quarantined, as is protocol for all strays. Before entering quarantine though, she met a sweet friend through the wooden gate.
“Kumo is our guardian dog,” Smith wrote in the video. “[He’s] the alpha of our pack and the friendliest [dog] ever. Before Deputy can enter, they must meet before quarantine.” Kumo reached through the fence to greet the new arrival and welcome him to the pack.
After just a week in quarantine, Deputy was able to meet the rest of the pack and has fit in perfectly! “He’s becoming more and more comfortable, that’s for sure,” Smith wrote in an Instagram comment. “He’s made himself right at home …”
One day, he will find his forever home via adoption, but for now he is living his best life! “[H]e’s a phenomenal, fun-loving dog!” Smith wrote. “Deputy is living the dream …”
