In a Meijer parking lot in Grand Rapids, Michigan, a small black-and-white dog darted nervously between cars and shopping carts, looking scared and alone.

A group of compassionate shoppers noticed her distress and quickly banded together to earn her trust. It took some time, but they managed to safely secure her—and that’s when they discovered the heartbreaking reason for her anxiety.
Around her collar, a piece of rope held a small baggie with a note that read: “My name is Rukey. Please help me, take me home.”

Realizing she had been abandoned, the group rushed Rukey to the Kent County Animal Shelter, where the staff was stunned by the unusual turn of events.
“We see a lot of abandoned pets, but it’s rare to find one with a note like this,” said Angela Hollinshead, the director of Kent County Animal Shelter. “This is the first time we’ve encountered a dog left in a public space with a note asking for help.”
The shelter believes Rukey is a young Schipperke mix. Though she’s a little shy at first, the staff could tell she was a loving, loyal dog.

“She’s small, sweet, and a little timid at first,” Hollinshead shared. “Once she gets to know you, she’s incredibly affectionate.”
The shelter shared Rukey’s story on Facebook, posting a heartfelt message directed toward her former owner. Full of empathy and understanding, the message acknowledged the difficult decision to let her go.
“To the person who had to make the heartbreaking choice to let her go—please know that Rukey is safe and loved,” the shelter wrote. “She’s already captured the hearts of our staff with her gentle nature. We can only imagine how difficult this was for you, and we sincerely wish you brighter days ahead.”
The post also reminded people to be kind to themselves and others, emphasizing that we all face struggles that are often hidden from view.
After her arrival, Rukey was spayed and received a clean bill of health, preparing her for adoption. And not long after, a loving family walked through the shelter doors, instantly falling for the shy pup. It was clear—Rukey had found her forever home.

Although her time at the shelter was brief, Rukey made a lasting impression on everyone she met. The shelter expressed their hope that her story would inspire kindness and compassion in others.
"Rukey is now in her new home, bringing joy to her new family," the shelter shared on Facebook. "Please remember to choose kindness.
