Low-Impact Activities to Keep Your Dog Moving

Staying active is just as important for dogs as it is for us, but not every pup needs (or wants) high-energy runs or endless games of fetch. Especially for senior dogs, large breeds, or pups recovering from injury, low-impact activities can be the key to keeping them healthy, mobile, and happy without putting unnecessary strain on their joints.

Here are a few ideas to try with your favorite furry bestie:

1. Leisurely Walks

A simple stroll around the block can do wonders. Keep the pace slow and steady, let your dog sniff around, and enjoy the mental stimulation as much as the movement.

For older pups or those with arthritis, shorter, more frequent walks are often better than one long trek.

2. Swimming

If your dog enjoys the water, swimming is one of the best low-impact exercises you can offer. It gives a full-body workout without putting stress on joints. Many rehabilitation centers even offer canine hydrotherapy pools for controlled, safe sessions.

3. Gentle Indoor Play

Not every activity needs to happen outside. Try rolling a soft toy across the floor or playing a slow game of tug-of-war with a lightweight toy. These small bursts of play keep your dog moving without overexertion.

4. Stretching & Mobility Exercises

Yes, dogs can stretch too! With guidance from your vet, you can learn simple stretching techniques or range-of-motion exercises to help your pup stay flexible and limber. These movements are especially great for dogs recovering from surgery or managing arthritis.

5. Slow, Controlled Stair Climbs

If your dog is able, a few trips up and down the stairs can be a gentle workout. Just be sure your pup has traction (no slippery floors) and takes it slow.

This type of activity is best for dogs who don’t have severe joint issues.

Supporting Their Recovery & Rest

After activity, comfort matters just as much as movement. A supportive bed, gives your pup the perfect place to recover. Our beds are designed to protect joints, ease pressure, and keep dogs of all ages comfortable, especially after a day of activity.
