Happy holidays!
To get you in the Christmas spirit, we’d like to share the story of Wicket and Lumen, two special needs pups who are spending Christmas together this year. They were given a second chance by Luvable Dog Rescue in Eugene, Oregon, a 55-acre wooded sanctuary for neglected dogs who need some extra love and attention before they are adopted into forever homes. The beautiful setting, fresh air, daily hikes, and stimulating play with other pups help these wonderful dogs to get back on their feet and give them the happy life they so deserve.
Wicket was born without eyes to an irresponsible breeder and felt very overwhelmed by the world until he was taken in by Christine, the puppy-care tech at Luvable. Christine is also fostering Lumen, a deaf Great Dane puppy who was born with congenital abnormalities in her feet and legs. She is undergoing a series of experimental life-saving surgeries that will hopefully allow her to live a long and fulfilling life.
Lumen and Wicket fell in love immediately. Wicket was able to bring Lumen out of her shell and help integrate her into the large pack at the rescue. And since Christine herself is hearing impaired, the three share a bond that she can’t readily put into words.
Christine says of special needs dogs, “The love that they have to offer will be unlike that of any other dog. Their enthusiasm for life is definitely more prominent than the average dog.”
The story of Lumen and Wicket makes us all the more grateful for everything we have this holiday season. Happy holidays to you and yours from the whole Big Barker team!
