The Tennis Court Dog Who Won A Town’s Heart

Most stray dogs’ dreams come true the day they find a forever home, but for one black street dog in Colombia, his happily ever after began the moment he stepped onto a public tennis court. In 2014, the stray wandered into Guarne’s Institute of Sports and Recreation, known locally as INDER, where tennis instructors quickly noticed something special about their unexpected visitor.

“The dog is obsessed with tennis balls,” instructor Duván Henao explained in a video shared by the facility. “He goes crazy over them.” From the very first day, the pup, later named Roger, spent hours chasing loose balls across the court, his tail wagging nonstop as he sprinted from one side to the other.

The staff placed food and water out for him, assuming he might move on by the next day, but Roger decided the court was exactly where he wanted to be. At first, he simply chased balls that rolled out of play and ran off proudly with them, not yet understanding the idea of returning them. Over time, however, he began bringing the balls back to the players, gradually turning playful chaos into a helpful routine.

“At first, it was hard because he didn’t really know how to retrieve the balls,” Henao said. “He would go off running with them. But as time passed, he learned how to bring them back.” With each passing month, Roger became less of a visitor and more of a teammate, eventually earning the unofficial role of the court’s dedicated ball collector.

Though Roger did not have a traditional home, the INDER community made sure he was cared for every day. The staff created a comfortable place for him to sleep inside their office, kept fresh food and water available, stayed on top of flea and tick treatments, and had him neutered to support the local stray population. Students quickly fell in love with the energetic dog who never seemed to tire of playtime.

“What I love most about Roger is that he’s always active, always on alert, and always wants to play,” said student Tomás Ruiz. “So we also play with him and have fun.” Over the years, the number of people who knew and adored Roger grew from a small group of instructors into hundreds of visitors and residents who looked forward to seeing him at the courts each day.

For 11 years, Roger showed up faithfully, running across the same tennis courts, chasing the same bright yellow balls, and watching generations of athletes grow up around him. His joyful presence became part of the identity of the facility and the surrounding community.

In 2025, the INDER team decided to honor him permanently by commissioning a statue that would celebrate the dog who had brought so much happiness to their town. Plans were made for a December unveiling ceremony, but only weeks before the event, Roger’s health declined rapidly. On November 21, surrounded by the instructors who had cared for him for more than a decade, he passed away.

In a statement shared by the organization, the team wrote that their “beloved Roger, the little dog who won everyone’s heart, is now playing in doggy heaven, surrounded by thousands of tennis balls.”

Although the loss was deeply felt, the community gathered as planned to unveil his statue, determined to celebrate the life he lived rather than the sadness of his passing. When the covering was lifted, a stone sculpture of Roger surrounded by tennis balls was revealed in one of his favorite places on the court. Applause, cheers, and tears filled the ceremony as the community honored the loyal dog who had given them more than a decade of companionship.

Roger may never have had a single official owner, but he had something many dogs never experience: an entire town that cared for him. As one representative from INDER explained, “Roger didn’t have an owner. He had a giant family.”

Today, his statue remains at the tennis courts where he once ran tirelessly, a lasting reminder that sometimes the greatest homes are built not by walls and doors, but by the people who choose to love you every day.
