A Tiny Puppy’s Journey From Survival to Forever

On a cold November morning in Detroit, Michigan, a routine stop at a gas station turned into a life saving moment for a tiny puppy who had been all but forgotten.

A security guard noticed a small white and brown pit bull puppy scavenging through trash beside a dumpster. The puppy was alone, visibly emaciated, and struggling to survive in the cold. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, the guard knew he could not leave without helping.

With no other dogs in sight and freezing temperatures setting in, he carefully scooped the puppy up, placed him in a box, and brought him to work. Knowing that a coworker volunteered with a local dog rescue, he reached out immediately for help. That call set off a chain of compassion that would ultimately change the puppy’s life forever.

The rescue took the puppy in and shared his photo online, hoping to find a foster home quickly. When veterinary technician, Liz Haack, saw the post, she felt an instant pull to help. Though she typically fostered kittens, something about this puppy made her stop scrolling and take action.

Once her foster application was approved, Liz rushed to pick him up. When she finally held him, the reality of his condition hit hard. The puppy, later named Joey, was just five weeks old and weighed only three pounds.

He was severely underweight, dehydrated, and cold, with a bloated belly from hunger and worms. Liz knew that if Joey had remained outside any longer, he likely would not have survived.

Joey’s condition was delicate, but he was in experienced hands. Liz immediately began treatment, providing fluids, deworming medication, and small, frequent meals. Most importantly, she kept him warm and surrounded by comfort.

At first, Joey was weak. But with food, fluids, and consistent care, he slowly began to perk up. Like many puppies his age, all he wanted was to be held, snuggled, and allowed to rest. Liz happily obliged, giving him the safety and affection he had never known.

Week by week, Joey transformed. He gained weight, his energy returned, and his personality began to shine. He even formed a close bond with Liz’s two year old golden retriever, who became his constant companion and playmate.

As months passed, Joey grew into a healthy, happy young dog and was officially ready for adoption. But when a potential adopter was mentioned, Liz realized something important. She could not imagine her life without him.

After a day filled with tears and reflection, she made the decision to adopt Joey herself. It was clear that he was already home.

The family recently celebrated the first anniversary of Joey’s rescue, marking a full year since his life changed forever.

While no one knows exactly what Joey experienced before that cold morning in November, it no longer defines him. Thanks to one compassionate stranger and a foster mom who followed her heart, Joey’s story is now filled with warmth, security, and love.

His journey is a powerful reminder that sometimes, one small act of kindness is all it takes to save a life.
