A Shelter Dog’s Birthday Wish for a Forever Home

On January 23rd, Percy reached a heartbreaking milestone, 1,500 days spent waiting for a home at PAWS Humane Society, Inc. in Wilmington. That is more than four years in a shelter and nearly half the life of this estimated eight year old American Staffordshire terrier. Instead of letting the day pass quietly, the shelter chose hope.

On January 24th, PAWS hosted a birthday celebration called Paw-ty for Percy, inviting the community and all potential adopters to come meet the dog who has waited far too long for a forever family.

Percy arrived at PAWS four years ago and has patiently watched other dogs come and go while he remained. Despite being loving, loyal, and full of personality, he continues to be overlooked. Shelter staff shared that the event is not only meant to celebrate Percy but also to bring attention to the many long term shelter dogs like him who quietly wait in kennels across the country.

According to his adoption profile, Percy is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and house trained, and his adoption fee has even been covered to help remove barriers for the right adopter. He would do best as the only pet in the home, as he is not compatible with other dogs or cats, but what he lacks in animal companionship he makes up for in human devotion.

He loves people and becomes especially affectionate once he gets to know you, and volunteers describe him as "the bestest boy" and a true favorite among those who care for him daily.

Over the years, Percy has maintained a sunny and optimistic personality despite hundreds of days of being passed by. He is calm on a leash, relaxed during car rides, and happiest when basking in the sun, enjoying belly rubs, savoring treats, or playing with toys. His steady temperament and affectionate nature make him a wonderful candidate for a family ready to give him the spotlight he has long deserved.

Long term shelter dogs are often overlooked due to age, breed stigma, or simple timing, but they frequently make deeply loyal and devoted companions because their personalities are well known and their needs are clearly understood.

Percy’s birthday celebration is more than a party. It is a reminder that every dog deserves a home, a couch to curl up on, and people to call their own. After 1,500 days of waiting, Percy still greets each day with hope, still wagging his tail and believing his person is out there.
