I bought this bed because of the excellent customer reviews. I knew if I went for a cheaper one and it didn't work out that I would just end up coming back to this one and spending the money on it anyway. My 11 year old lab is having the usual lab problems that come up at that age. It is especially hard on her since she struggled with epilepsy a lot when she was younger and seemed to age rather quickly.
The first night I was so excited to show her the new bed--then she didn't even sleep on it. I was disappointed and worried that it wasn't going to be able to help her. However, she has slept on it every night since then, and loves it. She used to be grumpy at bed time, not even wanting me to touch her at night, but now she wags her tail and happily waits for me to tuck her in. Twice since she started sleeping in this bed, she has gotten up on the couch during the day. It had been years since she had sat on the couch!
My sweet old dog is one happy puppy after a good night's sleep.
UPDATE: I have had this dog bed for a year now, and it is still wonderful. It is my 12-year-old lab's favorite place to spend her time. It is so easy to clean. I've really only needed to vacuum it and wipe it with a damp cloth. Haven't even had to take the cover off. The bed is still in good shape and just as perky as the first night she slept on it. I really think it helps her to get a good night sleep and get up in the morning with fewer aches and pain than she would have otherwise. She is also less grumpy at bed time than she was before we got the bed. I usually sit with her on it for a few minutes before she goes to sleep now, and we have some quality time while I talk to her and pet her before bed. I hate to see my little girl getting older, but I am happy to be able to spoil her in her senior years. This bed is so worth it!
First off in terms of customer service, this company is the best that I have ever personally dealt with. A few days after delivery the owner personally emailed me to make sure that I was satisfied with the product. I sent him photos of the bed and noted that it hadn’t fully expanded yet, he saw right away that mine was defective and offered to send me a replacement, free of charge AND let me keep the defective one which is still serviceable but not as attractive. I have never had someone follow up after a purchase to make sure I was satisfied, it was a pleasant surprise.
As to the bed itself, it was a birthday gift for my aging, arthritic German Shepherd mutt. After years of dropping a Ben Franklin here and there on so called orthopedic beds that would flatten like a pancake after a year of usage, I decided it was time to invest in one that had a warranty the company could stand by. Big Barker claims their beds will hold up for at least a decade which is the most impressive claim I could find in the big dog bed market. Even though the cost at first seemed off-putting, I realized quickly that in my years of buying inferior beds I had spent more than I would have if I’d just purchased a Big Barker to begin with. Also, I feel good knowing that these beds are handmade and use only USA sourced materials.
All of this is well and good, but the most important factor was if my big dog would use it. Let the evidence speak for itself.
I bought this bed for my 13 year old Golden Retriever, Jake. He had knee surgery three years ago and both knees are full of arthritis. He's a big dog, a little over 100 pounds and you can see the comfort this bed brings to him. Normal dog beds are not strong enough for him because of his weight. The thickness of this bed allows him to stand up a little easier and while that might not seem like a big deal to most, it has made a world of difference to him. He loves the head rest. If I could change one thing, it would be that I had found this bed for him sooner.
I have a great dane (like many of the reviewers) he is older (8 now) and beginning to show signs of arthritis. I run a veterinary hospital, so of course I am doing everything I can (medically, nutritionally, supplements) to stave off the degeneration of his joints.
One of the most important things to me is to make sure he is comfortable. I get a pretty good discount on pet goods at one of the big box pet stores and have gone through hundreds of dollars of "orthopedic" dog beds over the past few years. They either get so stinky I can't stand them because they don't have removable covers, or they smush so flat in a matter of months he would just rather lay on the floor beside them. I did buy one from Costco that lasted almost a year, but when I went back to replace it, they didn't sell them anymore
I had seen the Big Barker beds online and on blogs before, but the price tag was a big deterrent. Finally, I bit the bullet and bought one. WOW. It is the MOST comfortable, high quality bed I have ever seen (and I have looked around pretty much everywhere.) All of my animals gravitated to it within hours (even my husband likes to lay on it..)
My dane is a licker (of feet, fabric, anything) and has already drooled all over the cover. I stuck it in the wash hoping for the best and was surprised that it fit right back on. (I also opted for the waterproof liner, which I would highly recommend since the foam inside the thin cover is very porous and will absorb wet messes and odors fairly easily.) Now I am kicking myself for wasting money on crappier beds when I could've bought this one months, nay years ago and saved myself and my dane some heartache. We will see how it holds up over the months, but seeing as how it comes with a 10 year product guarantee and 5 star ratings, I have high hopes.
On a side note - I really appreciate the burgundy color of the cover I purchased! The aesthetic of the bed is also very pleasing so I don't mind it laying in the middle of the floor like some other ugly beds I have brought home in the past.
We have a 145 lbs Neapolitan Mastiff, Harley, who used an old love seat as her bed. We wanted to replace that with new couch and put something in the corner for Harley. She is home a lot while I work and I wanted the replacement to be as comfortable as the couch.
Before I bought this bed I did my research. After looking at numerous beds at pet stores and comparing them to what was online, this bed stood out. I was very hesitant about the price but my thought was I was only going to have buy it once it would be worth it. My theory was spot on. The bed is solid but comfortable and doesn't come close to flattening out even when she is standing. I built a platform frame for it and as you can tell in the picture she is quite content.
My dog is SUPER finicky about EVERYTHING (AKA spoiled) and the first night that we had this new bed, I left his old bed in the same room... and he chose the old bed all night. I was so sad that he didn't love his new bed as much as we did. The next morning I came out to the living room to find him snoring on the new bed!! This is huge because every morning for the past 5 years, I've come out to him sound asleep on our couch... which is what I'm ultimately trying to lure him away from!!
I moved his old bed out to the patio, and he's absolutely fine with it... he lounges on the new bed, and the couch but is gradually spending more and more time on his bed. BUT, he sleeps on his new bed!!! YAY! :)
We ordered the large size bed, and our dog is 70 lbs... but, he's really slender, and tall (picardy shepherd), and he fits so perfectly on this size bed (with room to spare!). When he's laying on it, the bed hardly indents in... and he is definitely comfy. We've even laid on it, and it hardly dents in... and we weigh a LOT more than 70 lbs!!!!! We joked the first night saying, if he doesn't end up liking it, we'll use it for extra seating, or as a guest bed! I've bought a bunch of cheaper beds throughout the years, and a few higher end beds... but this is the BEST doggy bed I've ever had, and it was worth EVERY single cent!! I would absolutely buy this item again, but I have a feeling this thing is going to outlast US!
We ordered the khaki bed, and to me, it seems a little lighter than pictured.... which made me really happy. It looks really nice in our living room.
I highly recommend this bed for your doggy... if my finicky boy likes it... yours is sure to like it too!
I just purchased a large Big Barker in chocolate to put in my room for the Black Lab as she uses their old, flat egg crate cushion bed in my room now. I did it because these are top quality beds and so she can get a solid night's sleep. I'm hoping the other two don't try to crowd her out of the bed.
These beds are totally worth the money. Materials & quality are top notch. It's clear the company values their customers. Pre-delivery and follow-up emails after delivery are appreciated and drive home the point that they want their customers to be happy. I will be recommending this bed to everyone who has big dogs. My girls love it and so do I.
Had this bed saved in my wish list for a while, as I was trying to convince myself to splurge on a bed that's $240. But Ofc, my Hazel is worth it..and with Prime, it was here in a few days !!
I'm writing this review at 6pm, I've had the Big Barker for less than 2 minutes.
The reason for the 5 star review is that my Hazel jumped onto the bed IMMEDIATELY after I unboxed and unwrapped and laid down (she also sniffed it extremely hard as dogs do lol). She's loving it wrinkles and all..the bed is no where near its full height !! When you take it out of the box it is slighty shrunken and really wrinkled ! Not to worry, those will smooth out within a day or two as the bed inflates !!
Her loving the bed made it worth every single penny! And shoutout to Big Barker for their lovely email and 10 year warranty !
My Hazel is a 70lb Dalamtian, she's wide, tall, AND long, and the Large was perfect for her ! She's a curler AND a sprawler who loves to nest so it serves the best of both worlds for her.
I just hope she'll let me move it from the middle of the floor before its time to go to sleep 😂
If you're thinking about getting this bed and reading this review, add it to your cart and stop playing !
Your dog(s) will forever be grateful !!
The only thing I can say bad about this product is that it is making me feel like a horrible mother for making my dog sleep on such sub-quality products before I bought him this bed. Seeing the difference between the flimsy dog beds that he had in the past compared to this is shocking. My dog is 9 years old now and was starting to stretch more, take a little longer getting up and just kind of getting a slower start that he used to. This bed clearly has helped his hips which weren’t really an issue, just showing some signs of age. He is much quicker to get up and not as stiff first thing when he wakes up.
When I was shopping for this bed, I deliberated on size. Because I would consider my dog a medium/large dog weight in at 55lbs, I wasn’t sure what size to get so that he would be comfy. I gambled and went with the large and its perfect, if not too big. The good news is that all the animals in the house (and the nieces when they come to visit) love the bed. Its not unusual to see the cat and the dog cuddled up on it taking a nap.
The package arrived promptly. I received a nice email from the company explaining the set up which is minimal, just removing it from the box and shipping package really.
The quality of the cover is great. Within the first day we had to wash the cover (potty training our new little puppy). Washed up great and fit right back on.
Yes, the price seemed a bit steep before I saw the quality of it but now I really wish I would have made this purchase much sooner and not made my pup suffer on the thin bedding that I had to replace yearly. LOVE IT!
It's expensive, but has a ten year warranty never to go flat. How many cheap Walmart beds will you buy in that time? We bought the xl bed for our 125 lbs. pibble, both he and our 65 lbs. girl sleep on it. Remmy has a bad hip from a car run in and is especially stiff in the morning. This bed has Increased his range of motion and his limp is improved. He even jumps on my bed now lol. I have even laid on it, and is quite soft and supportive.
What a difference! My 50 lb pitbull has bilateral orthopedic surgeries on her knees and this bed has been amazing throughout her recovery. I noticed a difference the first night after she got up from this bed, she wasn't stiff and limping. With other dog beds, it takes her joints a while to warm up. After sleeping on this bed one night, you wouldn't even be able to tell she had major surgery.
Wonderful product and company! Worth every penny.
We recently moved to a house w no steps, two family members (a 2 legged & 4 a legged) were struggling with the stairs to the 2nd level of the 2 family we lived in. While moving a friend asked how many dogs we have, just the 2 I replied, I lost my GSD almost 2 yrs ago.
My friend then asked why I had so many dog beds (9) since OBVIOUSLY my dog slept w me because I had heavy duty steps made to access my bed. I laughed and explained it started so the dogs had a bed in the living room, my dog is now 13 and struggled getting up on the hardwood floors so if he's on a bed he can get up much easier, however my mom's 85# Bassett likes beds too, even w his own he will rotate between them cause he flattens them out, aggravating but understandable. I wasn't overly concerned because my dog sleeps with me.
I started a quest looking for a good bed for Cezar that wouldn't flatten out when Charlie slept on it, during this time, Cezar suffered a condition called old dog disease which mimics a stroke, lasts 7-10 days but causes the dog to stumble and fall the eyes dart repeated to one side effecting the vision and balance, very scary makes the dog anxious and nervous so they pace but constantly fall then can't get up, he would try to climb the steps to my bed but would fall so I would lift him on and off my bed, now he has a cyst on the inside of his rear leg which effects his balance so I have the old dog beds around my bed to cushion when he falls off my bed, hence all the dog beds.
I realized at some point I'm going to have to remove the steps, I worry what will happen if he falls while I'm at work, this was causing me a lot of stress, it also made me sad to think he wouldn't be sleeping with me and made me mad that every "good" nice bed I buy Charlie ruins! I saw the big Barker on Amazon, I went back and forth reading and rereading the benefits and reviews. I compared it with other higher priced beds but what set it apart was the 10 year warranty, nobody else offers that or stands behind their bed like that.
My next dilemma was do I really want to spend that much on a bed that my dog will probably not use and I didn't want to spend that much for a bed that Charlie will take over... Eventually I decided it would be worth it, the time is coming that my boy will not be able to get up on my bed and I want him to be just as comfortable in a bed of his own and hopefully happy.
I received the bed on Tuesday let it air out for 24 hrs, put it down Wednesday night and Charlie was stretched out and had a wonderful night sleep, Cezar checked it out last night and to my surprise he owns it, he loves it and hasn't let Charlie on it since!!
I am shocked, thrilled, happy and sad, I missed him last night but I am so relieved that I don't have to worry about him falling and hurting himself trying to get on my bed when I'm not here, he looks so happy and peaceful, I caught myself just watching him sleep, I think this purchase is the best thing I could have done for him and I want everyone to know it is worth it, if you are on the fence about the purchase all I can say is if u love your dog it's worth the risk, I bought this bed for a dog that didn't sleep in dog beds and I couldn't be happier!
OVERALL QUALITY: My 105lb Rottweiler has flattened all the standard "dog beds" we have purchased him. Not this one. This mattress is so amazingly strong that it barely budges against all 105lbs. That's impressive. Its firm, yet soft at the same time and appears to provide just enough support! The cover is very high quality material - not flimsy. It stays surprisingly COOL under him too, which is important because of his double-coat - Maximus tends to run hot. I cannot emphasize how impressive the overall quality of this product is! Even the zipper is top quality. I have two family members who have seen this bed and have already committed to buying it for their own fur baby. All someone has to do is SEE this bed and they're instantly sold - its that good.
WARRANTY: The warranty is ridiculous! Who gives a 10 year warranty? A company that is 100% confident their product is top of the line.
SLEEPING LIKE A BABY: Maximus is very particular ... about almost everything. I thought it would take him days, weeks even to accept the bed. Wrong! It took him about 5 minutes to love the bed, the time it took for him to sniff it out completely. Tip: Wash the cover in cold water with fragrance free detergent and no softeners of any kind. I dried it for 5 min. on low heat and then hung it on the clothes line until dry and fresh. I did not have to train him at all, bribe him or even lay on it with him.
THE VALUE: Yes its a lot of $$. But worth every cent. Add up every cheap bed you've ever bought and will buy for your pet and it will probably be more than the purchase of Big Barker. Its an investment for drama-free sleep AND the health of your pet. My boy has moderate hip dysplasia and this will help him tremendously.
Lastly ... ITS MADE IN THE U.S.A.!! Well, that explains the quality, because I couldn't get this from an item made overseas or across the border. Buy the bed ... you wont' regret it.
The best dogs deserve the best beds. This is by far the most sturdy and supportive dog bed I've ever seen. My 115 lb. German Shepherd now has spinal spondylitis, and was starting to lose sensation in his back paws, making it difficult to walk. Along with other treatment, I believe this bed has helped a lot in his recovery, as he walks better and better each day since he's been sleeping on it.
The quality of this bed is about 1000 times better than the Chinese stuff at Wal-Mart. I kind of wish they made one big enough for me to sleep on. This is a small price to pay for a fantastic American made product that your dog will love, I know mine does.
These beds are AWESOME. I first bought one for my 13 year old lab because of her painful hips. I can already see a difference in her mobility.
The quality of the foam is like buying a high quality mattress for humans. Very supportive. My other Heinz 57 with 6 inch legs loves it but the 7 inches of foam was too high for her so I purchased the 4inch thick bed with head bolster for her!! Of course they take turns sleeping on either bed and I noticed that the 4" thick one was just as supportive for my lab!!
I have bought 4 beds in the last year from one of those big pet supermarkets and spent equal if not more on those beds that didn't hold up. I end up tossing them out because the foam wasn't holding up or they got soiled accidentally. I couldn't even donate them to a shelter. I love the liner to protect the foam and the suede like cover is very nice. Haven't had to wash yet. Most of all, I love the 10 year guarantee and that my girls are comfortable!!! Well worth the money because it will be the last beds I have to buy for at least 10 years!!
We have a 160lb bullmastiff named Tango and he jumped on the bed as soon as I threw it on the floor. He has been spending most of his time on it since. The bed is extremely expensive but I wish we purchased it sooner, rather than throwing away money on cheaper beds that didn't work for our dog.
