Making Life Easier for Arthritic Dogs

Osteoarthritis or arthritis is a common condition in many dogs over the age of seven. While the condition may often cause changes in the dogs’ everyday life, there are many things that we can do as owners to allow them to live a happy and comfortable life for as long as they may.

Appropriate pain and inflammation management plays an important role in success in arthritic cases and may be accomplished through many means inclusive of pharmacological, nutraceutical, modalities, hands on treatment and more. There are also many things’ owners can do at home to help keep their dogs as safe and comfortable as possible.

The avoidance of slippery floors can help arthritic dogs a great deal. Placing down nonskid mats, such as yoga mats or textured carpets will help arthritic dogs not slip on tiled or hardwood floor. Dogs with osteoarthritis will have decreased balance and proprioception, so preventing slipping will be very helpful. Trimming hair around the toe pads and nails, as well as trimming the nails, are also important to help with preventing slips and secure positions of the body.

Dogs with arthritis may have a tough time going up and down stairs, jumping on and off furniture and getting in and out of a car. Harnesses can help the owner and the dog with all of these activities. Finding a harness that is both ergonomically friendly for both the owner and the dog is important.

A ramp and/or a step may be used to help get in and out of the car, as well as on and off furniture. A ramp may take some practicing and should also be nonskid to allow the dog to move securely up and down. Practicing with treats and patience is advisable. A large step may be used to get in and out of a car, especially a SUV. Some dogs find this more secure than a ramp.

Feeding bowls and water bowls should be on a nonskid mat, and elevated for many dogs. The elevation of the bowls allows them to eat and drink more comfortably, without additional stress on their body.

Appropriate sleep and rest are important in any dog, but especially a dog with arthritis. Comfortable and supportive dog beds are important in the areas the dog sleeps in, as well as in the car. Appropriate bedding will allow the dog comfort and decreased positional changes while resting.

Regular and frequent activity is important for mobility, health and enrichment in the arthritic dog. Enriching activities such as toys, snuffle mats and games help with overall health and respiratory health. Shorter and frequent walks assist with mobility, range of motion, and overall health. Balance and postural exercises may also be added to help with overall strength and core.
