Building Good Sleep Habits Early: A Guide for New Puppy Parents

Bringing home a new puppy is a joyful whirlwind of belly rubs, zoomies, and first-time experiences, for both of you! But, one of the most important things you can do is help your pup establish healthy sleep habits early on. Just like humans, dogs need quality sleep to support brain development, growth, and emotional balance.

Puppies sleep a lot, often 18 to 20 hours a day. During this time, their bodies are growing, brains are processing new experiences, and energy is recharging for tomorrow's adventures. Without consistent rest, they may become overtired, cranky, or even more prone to destructive behavior.

Here's a step-by-step guide for new puppy parents on how to build good sleep habits early:

Create a Calm, Consistent Sleep Space

Start by choosing a cozy, quiet spot your puppy can associate with sleep. Whether it's in a crate, pen, or puppy-proofed corner of the house, consistency is key. Add a supportive bed like the Barker Junior, designed specifically for growing joints and restless sleepers, to create a safe, soothing environment.

Stick to a Routine

Puppies thrive on structure. Set regular times for meals, potty breaks, play, and sleep. A consistent bedtime helps your puppy's internal clock adjust, making it easier for them to settle down at night. Try to wind down with a calm activity like a short cuddle session or gentle chew toy play before lights out.

Watch the Timing of Meals and Water

Avoid feeding your puppy or giving large amounts of water too close to bedtime. This can help reduce late-night potty accidents and restless behavior. Aim for the last meal about 3 hours before bed, with a final potty break right before tucking them in.

Minimize Distractions

Keep the sleep space quiet and dim at night. If your puppy is adjusting to being alone, a white noise machine or soft classical music can help mask unfamiliar sounds and ease separation anxiety.

Upgrade Their Bed As They Grow

Just like shoes, beds need to be sized up as your pup grows! As your dog gets older, investing in an orthopedic bed can help protect developing joints and promote deeper, more restorative sleep especially for large breeds prone to joint issues.

Be Patient and Positive

It’s normal for puppies to whine or wake up during the night in the beginning. Resist the urge to comfort them every time, this teaches independence. Instead, offer reassurance during potty breaks and guide them back to bed with calm confidence.

By building good sleep habits early, you’re setting the foundation for a healthier, happier life together. And when your pup sleeps well, you do too! 🐾
