Autumn Adventures: Enrichment Ideas for Brisk Days
When the air turns crisp and the leaves start to fall, autumn brings a whole new world of excitement for you and your dog to explore. While cooler weather might make you want to cozy up inside, it’s actually one of the best seasons to keep your pup active, engaged, and happy.
Whether you’re heading outdoors or creating cozy enrichment moments at home, here are a few ways to make the most of those brisk fall days, all while keeping your dog’s tail wagging.
1. Hit the Trails for a Leafy Adventure
Fall hikes are perfect for dogs, fewer bugs, cooler temps, and endless new scents. Pack your pup’s travel bed so they can rest comfortably after your outdoor adventure. Let them sniff and explore along the trail (it’s mental stimulation, too!). Just remember to check their paws afterward, those crunchy leaves can sometimes hide pesky burrs or ticks.

2. Create a Fall-Themed Snuffle Hunt
Bring the outdoors inside by hiding treats in a pile of safe, clean leaves or use a snuffle mat filled with autumn-scented goodies like pumpkin-flavored training treats. This kind of foraging activity taps into your dog’s natural instincts and gives them an enriching mental challenge, especially on chilly or rainy days when outdoor play isn’t ideal.
3. Practice “Trick or Treat” Training
Who says trick-or-treating is just for kids? Teach your pup a few new tricks, like “spin,” “bow,” or “take a bow”, and reward them with a healthy treat each time they get it right. Training keeps their brain sharp and builds your bond. Once they’re tuckered out, they’ll love curling up on their Barker Bed for a well-earned nap.

4. Visit a Pet-Friendly Apple Orchard or Pumpkin Patch
Many orchards and farms welcome leashed dogs, making for a fun day out together. Snap some cute fall photos (because we all love a dog in a pumpkin patch!) and enjoy the season’s smells and sounds. It’s a great way to add variety to your dog’s routine and get them socialized in new environments.
Whether it’s after a hike, a snuffle session, or a leaf pile romp, your dog deserves the best rest possible!
